Sponto To Awesomize The Events Around Washington DC

Sponto, the Washington DC based mobile party detection app that originally launched for college kids just launched their special edition Android app for DC week. The app allows regional tech community to experience DC week from anywhere in real time.

You and other participants will be able to form ad-hoc, spontaneous events simply by coming together with your phones in and around DC week events. Once detected, event participants can add their Facebook friends and post photos and descriptions to create a rich, real-time feed of everything that’s happening during DC week. Sponto Gearing up to Awesomize Colleges starting with the ones around Awesome DC

Sponto is a mobile party detection app for college students built by one of the coolest DC entrepreneur, Jamey Harvey who I know since Web 1.0 era. Up until last week Sponto was only available to students at the University of Maryland where it’s been burning up the campus.

I wish they were around when I was going to college, because essentially what it does is tell you where all the free food, booze and hot babes (hot dudes like me in your case ladies ;-)) are near you!

Their app has enabled The GWU (my Alma Mater) as well as American University, Georgetown, Howard, Catholic, UDC, Catholic, Trinity, Gallaudet and the Corcoran School of Art.  If you’re a student at one of these schools you can register for Sponto now and start sharing parties and events. Mobile to PC Video Calls brought to you by Yahoo Apps

Yahoo is working on a new mobile app for both iPhone and Android that enables video calls over Wi-Fi and carrier networks to Yahoo Messenger users.

It’s not quite clear whether the app will be free or not.

From the limited information I have learned about the service, I think  the service will be more feature-rich and have a much larger reach than Apple’s. FaceTime works between iPhone 4 users only and limits support to calls over Wi-Fi to maintain video call quality. Read more of this post

The Administration in the Palm of our Hand

by Elias Shams
You have to admit! This is the first administration that has stayed way the head of the technology curve. They have been working hard to harness all digital channels to effectively communicate with citizens. As the mobile phones are slowly becoming our next computing device, the White House is trying to make sure we can watch them in the palm of our hand starting with iPhone.

Earlier this week, the White House released their own official free iPhone and iPod Touch App known as “White House App” to the iTunes App Store. The free App will allows us to see content from the WhiteHouse.gov including the News, Press Briefing Room, White House Blog posts, archived video of events and speeches. The one feature I am looking forward to try, is the ability to stream live video coverage of events, including next week’s State of the Union Address from WhiteHouse.gov/live.

I haven’t downloaded the App yet, but feedback from friends who did, is good. The app is clean, light on size, easy to use and informative. What I am impressed the most, is they are already working on the App for other smart phones including Android, Droid Nexus One , etc.  They will be released in coming weeks.

From my experience, It is not that easy and cheap to make an App for iPhone and shortly after for Android, and other phones. I wonder if the administration is using Appmakr, the product I recently covered that allows companies to make their Apps for various platforms (iPhone, Android, Droid, etc.) in the matter of 10 minutes. If they aren’t, they should. They will save both time and money. After all, their office is only four or five blocks from the White House.

That is a major stride towards open government. Can you imagine Bush or any GOP leader doing something like this? That’s a laugh 🙂

The free White House App is available from the iTunes App Store.
